The Formula Behind the Calculator

To find the score you need on a final exam, the tool rearranges the weighted-average formula to solve for the unknown. The result is Required = (Goal − Current × (1 − W)) ÷ W, where Goal is your target course grade, Current is your grade before the final, and W is the final's weight as a decimal. It isolates exactly the score that makes your weighted total hit your goal.

A Worked Example

Suppose you currently have an 88% and the final is worth 25% of your grade, and you want to finish with a 90%. Plugging in: (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96%. So you need a 96% on the final to reach a 90% overall. Change any input — a heavier final or a lower current grade — and the required score moves accordingly, letting you test scenarios quickly.

Reading Impossible or Guaranteed Results

Two edge cases are especially useful. If the required score comes out above 100%, your goal is unreachable through the final alone, and you should pursue extra credit or adjust your target. If it comes out at or below 0%, you have already locked in your desired grade regardless of the final. Both outcomes turn a vague worry into a clear, actionable number.

Getting Accurate Inputs

The calculator is only as accurate as your numbers, so pull the final's weight straight from the syllabus and make sure your "current grade" already reflects every graded item so far. If your course uses a points-based system instead of weighted categories, convert your standing to a percentage first. Knowing the exact score you need lets you prioritize study time and set realistic expectations before you walk into the exam.
